What is Henna?

Henna powder is a finely ground product made from the dried leaves of the henna plant. It is important to know that although most henna is suitable for hair dyeing, the powder used for body art is made from the plant’s fresh shoots, ground much more finely and packaged airtight, which keeps it usable for 1–2 years.

Body painting with henna has a tradition spanning thousands of years, from India through the Middle East to North Africa. It is believed to offer protection, bring good luck, and symbolize happiness and celebration. To this day, it accompanies women through important turning points in their lives.
In many cultures, the “henna night” or “mehndi party” is an essential part of a bachelorette celebration, during which the bride’s hands and feet are adorned with henna while the women of her family and her friends gather around her in joy and celebration.

Henna is becoming increasingly popular in the Western world as well. Whether it features traditional motifs or modern designs, women’s enthusiasm continues to grow.
Among contemporary traditions is decorating the belly of expectant mothers with henna, which has become a beautiful and meaningful way to celebrate the arrival of a new family member.

Who is the artist?

I am Nisanta, my civil name is Péter Sándorfi, the owner of Hennajagua.hu. Indian culture has been an integral part of my life since 1998, and I began practicing henna art in 2011. Since 2015, I have been teaching henna painting, and you can find my work at www.thehennagrove.com.

After a few years of practice, we felt the desire to continue developing and to bring henna artists together as a friendly community in Hungary.
With this intention, together with Gyöngyvér Hegedüs, we organized the National Henna Artists’ Meeting, as well as an international henna conference, the East West Mehndi Meet.
